Weekly Content Update | Carrier Phrases and Simple Opposites

This Week at Gemiini

We uploaded dozens of clips in a new format we've developed for teaching simple opposite pairs. We also have two new batches of carrier phrases to share. Read on to learn more!

Simple Opposites

I am thrilled to talk about the new simple opposites content we have added to the site. These clips pair voice-over with clear visual examples for each word and its opposite. Teaching the meanings of these words through contrast helps to solidify the definition of each term in the minds of our students.

All of our simple opposites clips can be found in Reading, Writing, & Academic → Vocabulary Builders → Simple Opposites. Adding these clips to your assignments can open a door for your student to begin describing things seen in his or her environment. These clips would be also be great for individuals who are beginning to explore the relationships between different words.

Carrier Phrases: Open

The first new batch of carrier phrases generalizes usage of the word open across ten scenarios. In each scene, the child pairs the word with different simple nouns to make a variety of requests (open box, open bag, open lid, etc.) The child is always motivated to approach the adult and initiate communication by their desire to engage in a reinforcing activity like having a snack or receiving positive attention. In addition to generalizing the language, these clips serve as a behavioral model for students who are practicing initiating effective requests for help.

Carrier Phrases: I Feel

The new "I Feel" carrier phrases clips were designed to teach language related to expressing feelings. These clips pair the target language with high-energy, enthusiastic demonstrations of basic emotions by our actors. To keep the objective focused on teaching the target language, this project focuses on emotions that can be expressed unambiguously through visual cues alone. Carrier phrases clips are located in Spoken Language → Conversational → Encouraging Conversations → Carrier Phrases.
