Weekly Content Update | Spelling
This Week at Gemiini
This week our film team has uploaded clips in two brand new formats for teaching written and oral spelling. The new Spelling Test clips teach spelling in writing, and our Spelling Bee format provides a model for students who are learning to spell out loud. We've also added a new batch of image words teaching different modes of air travel.
Spelling
Learning to spell is an important part of language proficiency. Spelling practice helps students learn the basic rules of language. It is a great way for students to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between sounds and letters. Spelling and reading abilities are closely related, and improving spelling can have a positive impact on your learner's reading skills.
Spelling Test
Our Spelling Test clips take place in a classroom setting. A child is given a spelling prompt, and the correct spelling is shown to the audience in a thought bubble as the student considers how to spell the word. The student puts her pencil to paper and the visual cuts to a close-up as the student writes the word for the camera.
Spelling Test clips are located in Reading, Writing, & Academic → Spelling → Written Spelling Tests.
Spelling Bee
In our Spelling Bee clips, the child stands center-stage with a microphone as an adult gives a spelling prompt from offscreen. The child repeats the word and then spells it out loud for the audience. Each letter appears on screen as the child spells the word. When the child is finished spelling, the letters snap together to show the full word.
Spelling Bee clips can be found in Reading, Writing, & Academic → Spelling → Spelling-Bee.
We recommend generalizing the language from these clips as much as possible. An assignment with the objective of teaching your student to spell the word "as" might include both the Spelling Test clip and the Spelling Bee Clip for "as". You might choose to have the sequence begin with the reading word clip for "as", followed by the alphabet and articulation clips for each letter and sound in the word. Clips in the Gemiini library can be used together this way to target many different objectives.
Our newest spelling clips teach written and oral spelling for a batch words we suggest for students learning to read and write at a Kindergarten level. Our film team is currently working on additional spelling clips for higher grade level words. Look for these in future content updates!
Image Words: In the Air
The newest batch of image words teaches vocabulary for different modes of air transportation. If your learner is interested in airplanes, check out the new generalizations in Spoken Language → People, Places, Things → Vehicles & Roads → In the Air.
